Purchaser Jobs

Purchasers receive, analyze, and edit requisitions for the purchase of materials, supplies, and equipment. Purchasers confer with department personnel concerning the availability, cost, and use of commodities. Purchasers analyze quotes and determine the most suitable vendors. Purchasers advise user departments and vendors regarding appropriate purchasing methods and procedures. Purchasers investigate and resolve complaints related to receipt of goods and performance of services. Purchasers maintain detailed purchasing records including commodity and service codes. Purchasers use computerized systems to process purchase orders, research vendors, and produce reports as required. Purchasers prepare and process requisitions and purchase orders for supplies and equipment. Purchasers analyze market and delivery systems in order to assess present and future material availability. Purchasers develop and implement purchasing and contract management instructions, policies, and procedures. Purchasers review, evaluate, and approve specifications for issuing and awarding bids. Purchasers direct and coordinate activities of personnel engaged in buying, selling, and distributing materials, equipment, machinery, and supplies. Purchasers prepare reports regarding market conditions and merchandise costs.

Purchasers require a bachelor’s degree and work experience of two to three years in a relevant field. Purchasers should have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with departmental personnel and vendors. Purchasers should have one to two years of verifiable purchasing experience. Purchasers should have demonstrated negotiation and analytical skills. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, are required.
