Operational managers determine staffing requirements and interview, hire, and train new employees or oversee those personnel processes. Operational managers direct and coordinate organizations’ financial and budget activities to fund operations, maximize investments, and increase efficiency. Operational managers establish and implement departmental policies, goals, objectives, and procedures by conferring with board members, organization officials, and staff members as necessary. Operational managers manage staff, prepare work schedules, and assign specific duties. Operational managers monitor businesses and agencies to ensure that they efficiently and effectively provide needed services while staying within budgetary limits. Operational managers plan and direct activities such as sales promotions, coordinating with other department heads as required. Operational managers review financial statements, sales and activity reports, and other performance data to measure productivity and goal achievement and to determine areas needing cost reduction and program improvement. Operational managers determine goods and services to be sold and set prices and credit terms based on forecasts of customer demand. Operational managers develop and implement product-marketing strategies including advertising campaigns and sales promotions.

Operational managers require a bachelor’s degree and a minimum of two to three years of experience working in the business management field or an equivalent field. Operational managers should have excellent analytical, team building, and management skills. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required. Proven organizational and managerial skills are a must.
