Technical managers manage the day-to-day field operations of the technical teams. Technical managers establish and execute policies and procedures within the technical department. Technical managers have comprehensive understanding of the techniques of a professional-services or consultancy firm, public relations, communications, or related field. Technical managers contribute to the overall performance of the firm by managing current staff/client relationships and programs, generating new business, recruiting, and developing. Technical managers ensure that the objectives of the company, as agreed upon by the strategic management, are properly carried out. Technical managers set the technical vision of the company and ensure it is propagated to all technical teams. Technical managers seek and participate in personal development opportunities above and beyond required training. Technical managers train other innovators and clients through both formal and informal training programs. Technical managers encourage more junior innovators to take responsibility for their development within the company. Technical managers challenge fellow innovators to progress toward their professional development goals.

Technical managers require a bachelor’s degree in science, engineering, or an equivalent field. Technical managers should have proven leadership capability and experience managing a team. Technical managers should be able to communicate through both verbal and written means and must have excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to negotiate and consult with various individuals. Experience in estimating, planning, designing, and implementing business solutions is beneficial.
