Green Coffee Buyer I


Department: Green Coffee

Reports to: General Manager of Green Coffee and Tea


This position supports the following areas in the green coffee and tea supply chain: vendor relationships, logistics, quality assurance, and the financial and inventory management aspects of the purchase of green coffee and tea products for the organization by performing the following duties.

Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions Only:

Purchasing and Inventory Management

Works closely with supervisor to develop and execute buying and pricing strategies to achieve quality and pricing targets.

Monitors and understands international and local market information and assists with evaluation of buying decisions.

Monitors position and forecasts of demand and inventory levels to determine buying needs

Works closely with Logistics Team to ensure freight costs are minimized.

Stays in touch with industry peers to gain ideas for cost saving opportunities.

Utilizes position planning tools and system solutions to stay within targeted inventory levels.


Monitors  established company quality standards for coffee and tea products.

Participates in coffee and tea cupping preparation, evaluation and contract approval.

Assists with raw material blending decisions to ensure consistent taste profiles.

Inspects physical grades to insure they match contractual agreements.

Assists with compliance with all aspects of FDA, Customs, and Homeland Security regulations with regard to handling, importing, and warehousing coffee and tea.


Acts as a resource to Sales, Education & Development, Marketing and Customer Care Departments to provide information to answer consumer and other inquiries, or assists with training programs  regarding coffee and tea knowledge.

Works closely with our internal customers (roasting plants) to understanding their needs and  concerns related to raw materials

Understands our supply chain and related logistics and functions as  support to the Logistics Administrators as needed.

Continually pursues increased coffee and tea knowledge through self-study, formal training or industry conferences.

Supervisory Responsibilities




Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Finance, Business, Accounting, or Mathematics plus two or more years’ experience working within the coffee industry.

Understanding of the Coffee Futures Market is a plus.

Coffee cupping and grading experience required.   Q grader a plus.

Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office products (Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook).  Knowledge of SAP is a plus

Travel Time

Must be able to travel up to 15% of the time, sometimes overnight and outside of the U.S.

Occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 lbs; regularly required to lift up to 10lbs.   

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

Most of the duties of this position will be perform inside an office environment.  The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions.  The employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions and is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, extreme cold, extreme heat and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment from production machinery is usually very loud.
